Despite their small size, electrical plugs contain various intricate design elements. One such detail is the two small holes on the prongs, which serve multiple functional purposes.
The small holes help secure the plug inside the socket, preventing it from being easily pulled out with a light tug. When inserting a plug, you may notice a slight resistance and need to push it firmly until you hear a soft click.
Once the plug is fully inserted, pulling the cord won’t easily remove it. This happens because metal clips inside the socket latch onto the holes, ensuring a firm grip that prevents accidental disconnection.
Some sockets have a locking function controlled by a switch. When the plug is inserted, and the switch is turned on, a metal pin is inserted into the small holes, locking the plug in place so that it cannot be easily removed.
This feature is commonly found in devices such as vending machines, where preventing unauthorized unplugging is crucial.
The small holes also enhance household safety, especially in homes with young children. Children might attempt to pull plugs out of sockets, increasing the risk of electric shock.
Sockets designed to latch onto the small holes make it harder for children to unplug devices, reducing potential hazards. Additionally, some sockets allow users to lock plugs in place when not in use, offering extra safety for families.
Some manufacturers place plastic instruction strips inside these holes as part of the product packaging. This ensures that safety warnings and user guidelines are visible to consumers.
Furthermore, despite their tiny size, these holes help manufacturers save a significant amount of metal when producing large quantities of plugs, making the design more cost-effective.
